Acoustic Design of Schools – A Design Guide.  BB93 . Used by Acoustic Associates (Peterborough) in noise assessments for educational buildings.

BB93 specifies the acoustic performance standards for schools; these recognise research which has shown that acoustics play a vital role in the learning environment. BB93 defines seven Performance Standards which aim to achieve clear communication of speech and optimal acoustics for study activities, they are:

1 Indoor ambient noise levels in unoccupied spaces.

2 Airborne sound insulation between spaces.

3 Airborne sound insulation between circulation spaces and other spaces used by students.

4 Impact sound insulation of floors

5 Reverberation in teaching spaces.

6 Sound absorption in corridors, entrance halls and stairwells.

7 Speech intelligibility in open plan spaces .
